The Community Ministries Commission is committed to the shared vision of St. Matthias' as we seek to deepen our living the baptismal covenant. As a commission, we support the people of St. Matthias' in fulfilling their baptismal covenant of "... proclaiming by word and example the Good News of God in Christ" ... and "... seeking to serve Christ in all people, loving our neighbors as ourselves. Responsiveness to people in need is an essential dimension of Christian faith and life, as Jesus repeatedly taught. To this end, St. Matthias' supports a number of organizations and programs our Christian faith, grow as a loving community, and serve the needs of others." Our mission is furthered through funds pledged to Community Ministries.

As of this writing, ministries that are funded include:

As of this writing, specific, hands-on ministries to the community are:

  • The Micah Initiative is a partnership of faith communities with elementary Richmond Public Schools that encourages mentoring, tutoring, and volunteering through its vibrant network of faith communities and 23 schools, so that every child believes, “I’m valuable.”
  • KAIROS is an ecumenical ministry adapting the three-day Cursillo weekend model to build a Christian community in a prison environment.  The ministry is committed to on-going support of the community via Prayer and Share and weekend reunion events.  The ministry is in both male and female facilities and is open to all who wish to participate.
