Planned Giving & Endowment

The St. Matthias’ Episcopal Church Endowment Fund was created in May 2003 to enable St. Matthias to more completely fulfill its mission by developing its ministries beyond what is possible through its annual operating funds and non-endowment restricted funds. Gifts made to the Endowment Fund are administered in a manner faithful to the loyalty of and devotion to God.

Funds may be used for capital needs, outreach ministries and grants, seed money for new ministries and special one-time projects and other purposes as designated by the donor.

Planning for and participating in the St. Matthias’ Church Endowment Fund is a deliberate way to provide stewardship beyond annual giving and helps create history as contributions are used in significant and lasting ways to enhance the Church and further support ministries. Benefits of participation include:

  • Ease of Participation- Simply contact a member of the vestry on how you may participate.
  • Donation Flexibility- Gifts may vary in size and type.
  • Tax Benefits & Savings- Gifts may be tax deductible under Federal Income, Gift and Estate taxes and Virginia Income, Gift and Inheritance taxes. Please consult your tax advisor on how this may apply to you.
  • Acknowledgement & Celebration - There are many opportunities to recognize loved ones and special occasions.

Ways to Contribute

All Gifts for the Endowment Fund are welcome including:

  • Cash or check contributions
  • Securities (stocks and bonds)
  • Bequests in estates and wills
  • Charitable gift annuity

Acceptance of gifts to the Fund other than cash and publicly traded securities has to be approved by the Board through a Gift Review Policy.

The Endowment Fund will support the development, beautification and improvement of the Church property and for the expansion of its religious, charitable and benevolent work. It is through the systematic accumulation of wealth that the Church can sustain itself for the long-term and support programs of significant contribution.

“Seek first to his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” Matthew 6:33

The Endowment Fund is managed by four members (referred to as the Endowment Fund Board), three of whom shall be members in good standing of St. Matthias’ Episcopal Church; they shall be appointed by the Vestry.  Additionally, the senior warden shall be a member.

The Endowment Fund Board is responsible for policy direction, professional oversight, distribution and financial accounting of the fund, which may be audited annually by a CPA.
