Outreach

The Outreach Commission works to provide encouragement and opportunities for members of the parish to use their time, talent and treasure to serve the needs of people in the greater Richmond community and beyond. Some of St. Matthias’ current outreach efforts include participation in:

CARITAS (Churches Around Richmond Involved to Assure Shelter) is a program in which churches house homeless individuals for a minimum of a week during cold weather.

Kairos a Greek work meaning God’s special time, is a non-denominational Christian renewal program that helps inmates create a Christian environment within the prison setting. Both men and women from St. Matthias' attend these sessions. Members are asked to bake cookies for the weekend.

CCHASM is a coalition of Chesterfield County churches that serve those in need; from assisting in welfare-to-work programs to mentoring.

Habitat for Humanity a coalition of churches building homes for residents in the Greater Richmond area.

Shelter Feeding Program is an effort by churches from the two area dioceses to serve five area homeless shelters each weekend. St. Matthias' is responsible for one Saturday each month.

Next Step in Mission

The adults are planning a mission trip to the Eastern Shore and one to Mississippi to help victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Chesterfield Christmas Mother

Each year several of our members serve on the Christmas Mother Committee plus many others donate their time when the families come in to get their gifts. St. Matthias' usually adopts 4-5 families annually.

Other Outreach opportunities include volunteering at the Cross Over Ministry and at Clark Springs Elementary School.
