Commissions

Christian Education for Adults

The commission members are responsible for providing opportunities and encouragement for adults to grow spiritually. Programs include adult classes and groups on Sunday mornings and other times. Christian learning and growth are also promoted and supported with the church's library of books and tapes and through extra-parish opportunities.

Buildings and Grounds

Buildings and Grounds is headed by two commissioners who work together to maintain the overall repair, safety and good appearance of the church, inviting and encouraging the surrounding community to join us in worship.

Communications

Good communication among members is important for the health and the ministry, one to another and to others, of the Body of Christ, the church. The commission works for good communication among St. Matthias' members and from the church to the community. The commission is responsible for such things as the bulletin board, posters, advertising, news articles and the website.

Fellowship

The commission works to provide opportunities for members of the parish and newcomers to the parish to get to know one another and become friends. As a healthy congregational body, the members of the church know and enjoy each other. As friendships develop, members are better able to minister to one another and to share with one another in spiritual growth and service to the community. Opportunities and social events provided by the commission members include weekly Sunday morning coffee hour and special Sunday receptions. The commission is also charged with such annual events as The Pig Roast, Summer Cheers, our Annual Parish Picnic and the Parish Family Weekend retreat at Chanco.

Membership

The commission members work for the incorporation of members and newcomers in the life, fellowship and ministry of St. Matthias'. Responsibilities include newcomer greeting on Sundays and follow-up with visitors to the church through a newcomer orientation program, invitations to parish socials and other events.

Outreach

The Outreach Commission works to provide encouragement and opportunities for members of the parish to use their time, talent and treasure to serve the needs of people in the greater Richmond community and beyond.

Pastoral Care

This commission, through its members, assists in providing pastoral care for parish members and their families. Responsibilities include meals, cards, notes and visits to members at time of need, sorrow or celebration. It includes a prayer chain of people who have agreed to be called when someone wants immediate prayers and visitation to sick and shut-in members.

Stewardship

The commission promotes good monetary, time and talent stewardship by members of the parish. Through an annual campaign for pledges, it is responsible for visiting or contacting members in implementation of the program.

Worship

The commission promotes good liturgy in form, conduct and participation including acolyting, altar preparation and supplies, lay reading, music, vestment purchases and upkeep, and ushering. Envisioning and planning special services for Sundays and other occasions is also the work of this commission. It involves the congregation in valuing and participation in meaningful and nourishing worship.

Youth

The Youth commission works for Christian formation, growth and fellowship of parish children and youth and their participation in parish life and ministry. Responsibilities include church school, junior and senior groups, preparation for Confirmation, nursery, children's liturgy, scouts and developing youth ministry to children and youth in surrounding neighborhoods.
