About St. Matthias' Episcopal Church

St. Matthias is always represented by the two-edged sword and the Bible. The two-edged sword represents the persuasiveness with which he preached the Gospel. The other side represents the manner in which he was martyred. He was beheaded. The Book represents the preaching of the word of God.

We are a congregation of The Episcopal Diocese of Southern Virginia in the Episcopal Church in the United States of America. (ECUSA is properly known as The Domestic and Foreign Missionary Society of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States of America.)

And they prayed and said, "Lord, who knowest the hearts of all men, show which one of these two thou hast chosen to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside, to go to his own place." And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias; and he was enrolled with the eleven apostles. - Acts of the Apostles 1:24-26
